Marc van den Berg — Heavy Metal Type
How can something I have always found so ugly become one of my design interests? I think the blackletters must have attracted me. Out of all the music album covers the (heavy) metal are definitely the most outspoken ones. Although most of them are recognizable because of their use of blackletters, I noticed that during doing research some of them distinguish themselves by using real confronting images of torn off limbs, saws and blood. A lot of blood. Come on, stop lying to yourself and admit that the combination of blackletters, frills, flames and blood is the best you have ever seen! Oh and did I tell about the (half)naked women?
HOW TO FIT IN
The type used is mostly blackletters with 3D or grunge effects. If the effect of the blackletter is not enough for you, make a lot of frills around it, maybe until it becomes unreadable. This should now look very scary. If it doesn’t, make sure to put in some outlines and/or colored drop shadows. If you need more, also underline it. Flames. FLAMES AND FRILLS!
